On June 29th in Tacoma town,
the Dome was a-rockin' with an awesome sound.
Three lead guitars and drums in the round,
no doubt you heard...
Lynyrd Skynyrd came to town!
There was Ed and Gary and Artimus too,
Billy and Leon... what a Rock 'n Roll stew.
They played all the old songs
that sounded brand new.
They touched every heart
and pulled us all through...
Through to that place that 10 years ago
brought us all together
in Elsewhen you know.
We made our own music then,
got in touch with our souls...
and we all tried to see
just how far we could go.
'Course Skynyrd was there just singin' that song
about being an underdog, and about being strong.
About standing on your own apart from the throng.
Singing about thinking about
was I right or wrong?
It was a time for trying, that was our creed...
we were burnin' and we were learnin' how to be free.
We didn't make no trouble,
we just wanted to see...
what was inside us, and who we could be.
Skynyrd sang the song about the Simple Man
and made the best swamp music this side of Alabam'.
'Saw them in Des Moines and Ames too
before their plane went down.
Now, how to live without that sound?
More of the great ones...
six feet underground.
Who would've thought
they'd come back to Tacoma town?
But come back they did
and they did it with style...
Wasn't a dry eye in the place
or a face without a smile.
Lynyrd Skynyrd came back
and shuffled our feet Southern style
and left me laughing like a well loved child.
